Is It Spring Yet?

I know I'm impatient but I've never been a good "wait-er." It's not even winter yet and I'm already jumping ahead to spring. Fortunately with western Oregon's relatively mild climate (knock on wood) I am graciously afforded gardening opportunities even during the dreary months.

One night a few weeks ago while I was lying in bed thinking about--what else--the garden, it dawned on me that I've got about six feet of wasted space that I could be using for more plants. Duh. Here is the spot.

This is the northeast corner of my garden that was originally intended to be a small cutting garden.
Behind the green lattice, the east and north fences converge.
For the past several years that area has been a convenient spot for...

This!
Most of my yard debris goes in to the two cans provided by the
waste company. But when I have too much, guess where it goes.
Yep. Right here.

I've got pretty flowers--like pink California poppies...

And Sweet William to "hide" it all.
Denial is a powerful thing.

Here is a "before photo" from October. I've got a large mirror right behind the lattice,
another (futile) effort to conceal the detritus.

It's kind of ugly and icky, isn't it?

So, while leaves from the lilac bush cover foliage of the Williams, I'm out here making changes.

For the benefit of both you and me, I didn't take any photos of me loading the wheelbarrow with that sorry mess.
But here you can see that it's gone and the trellis and mirror have been move to the very back of this spot
where the fences meet up.

From Home Depot, I've ordered a 16 foot roll of reed fencing, (like what you see here)
to cover the chain link fence.
I will attach the reed fencing to the chain link fence on the left in this photo.
Won't that look much better?
This is a full sun, hot location and I'm excited to see what I can grow here.
I'll keep you posted.

Oh yeah, when unearthing everything, I found these long lost clippers.
Oops.
Are you planning for next year's garden?
