Does This Look Familiar?

Look at all that stuff! Are you, like me, clipping and pruning and deadheading and tossing?

I can still detect the scent of Catmint on my hands. And you can see below that my cat was very um, well, "happy" with all of the trimmings.

Can you believe it's August already? I thought I'd share a little of what's blooming right now.

This is an Origanum 'Bristol Cross' I think. I've got 4 different varieties of ornamental Oregano and I can't keep them straight.

 Persicaria 'Firetail' is finally blooming.

 Phlox paniculata 'Bright Eyes'

 Potentilla fruticosa 'Pink Beauty'

 Rudbeckia 'Cherry Brandy'

 Teucrium 'Purple Tails'

And finally I wanted to show you the foliage on my Columbine. [Aquilegia vulgaris 'Woodside Strain.'] I have a lot of seed I'd like to give away to my beloved readers. If you want to email me [grace@gracepete.com] with your address I will get it to you. By the way, this seed can be sown immediately and will come true, meaning the plants will have this fabulous foliage from early spring until frost. Hardy to Zone 3.

  1. Bags and bags of deadheading material, guess we are all doing the same thing. I have to look for that Cherry Brandy.

  2. Had a wheelbarrow or two full myself this past weekend...such fun! We are over 18 inches short in rainfall this year, sigh. The blooms you have featured today are very pretty. Don't know much of Ornamental Oregano, nice. Columbine needs what type of soil and light conditions? The foliage is very interesting.

  3. With each photo I'm thinking 'Oh my'. These are all stunning. I love the ornamental oregano, didn't know there was such a thing.

Happy Gardening and have a great week.

  4. Hi Grace - just discovered your blog through a comment you left on Teza's Garden. I'm glad I did, it's a lovely blog.

Coveting the rudbeckia "Cherry Brandy" - never seen it before. Wow.

  5. Ah, yes. I have that columbine. Gorgeous, long-season foliage that's making a pretty filler in my many bare spots.

  6. Grace,

You have so many great perennials for this time of year! I need to visit this post later when I am thinking about what else to add to to my boarders to beef up August. I love the rudbeckia color!

And those columbine seeds are tempting! Thanks for the offer.

  7. You have some beautiful flowers going on,the Origanum and the Persicaria are beautiful colors.
I am still trying to reclaim a flower bed and now my raspberries have issues - the wheelbarrow is getting a workout.

  8. There's an upright oregano called 'Pilgrim' I'd like to try. The nepetas do so well for me but the cats just crush them in situ, not waiting for piles of clippings to roll in. Love the Teucrium PT. I'm going to try that AGAIN this fall. You inspire me, Grace, to keep trying!

  9. Wheelbarrows and wheelbarrows again today... it's like a jungle out there. :-) I'm loving all your beautiful blooms. I'm going with tails today... purple tails and firetails ... lovely!
I wonder if that foliage would survive here?

  10. Wish it looked familiar because I need to do what you have been doing and clean up. It is just too hot to do anything outside.
Oh...your garden looks so pretty with all the healthy blooms. Love that Cherry Brandy!

  11. Yes that does look very familiar. I've been cutting and trimming things over the last week, it always looks so nice and fresh once the stuff that's finished is cut back.
I also love that Cherry Brandy! Phlox has just barely started to bloom here.

  12. Love that Cherry Brandy! I have been meaning to get one. Might be kind of late in the season to find one now. I tried to grow it from seed last year, but it didn't work out. Any ideas on where I might find one?

  13. Beauties!! I am trying to figure out which Phlox (or two) to add to next summer's garden. Think it may have to be Bright Eyes....and David. :-)
My Cherry Brandy is about done blooming, need to deadhead but like that it is reseeding a bit....could use more of that pretty one.

  14. You sure have been busy, Grace! I am going to email you about the columbine, but I struggle with it, surely it will never look like yours!
Never thought about growing the oregano, but now I will look for it, yours is gorgeous!

  15. Looks soo familiar! lol I've been carting large garbage pail-fulls (with a hand truck!) to the road for garbage pick up- Iris clean up, don't take the chance of spreading any disease to the compost pile.
Your Cherry brandy is a looker! just lovely!!

  17. Hi Grace,
I've been going out early in the morning, and filling up a 3 gallon bucket or two with deadheads and such, then going in when it gets too hot. It's 9:10 p.m. CDT, and 83 degrees. We're excpecting highs in the mid to upper 80s for the rest of the week. I hope I will be able to last longer outside.

You have some awesome blooms there! I planted several kinds of persecarias, none of which have bloomed yet. I just found out that one, giant fleeceflower, is considered invasive. I don't know if it's the seeds that make it so, or the roots. I'll have to find out and be sure to deadhead if it's the seeds that make it invasive.

  18. Grace, that Rudbeckia 'Cherry Brandy is gorgeous! I'll be trimming and deadheading soon! Gotta get hubby home :)

  19. Yes, so familiar! I spent 7 hours in just one day last week filling wheelbarrows and now my compost pile is really happy.
I only have one ornamental oregano ('Santa Cruz') and wow, does it seed about. But the good thing is that it is easy to remove.
All the blooms you have look spectacular! I just planted a Persicaria, no blooms yet.

  20. I need to have a wheelbarrow or so full of trimmings but it's been so darn hot I can't make myself get out there other than mowing & watering! Hopefully soon.
I LOVE that oregano. I've told you before, you inspire me so much. You have the most awesome goodness in your garden. I never knew there were so many oreganos. I have one but that's it!
The persicaria & teucrium are GORGEOUS too. Do Rudbeckias make you itch or is it just me?? I don't have any this year (they don't winter over here) but in previous years, if I even brushed by them, my skin totally itched! I would be tempted to try again if I saw the 'Cherry Brandy' here tho!!

  21. That columbine looks just like what I have growing outside the back door! I love the foliage on it! We filled seven yard waste bags, plus two big yard waste containers--mostly with tree prunings that Joe very patiently cut into little pieces that would be acceptable to the yard waste guy. He doesn't like us very much!

  22. Wow, that ornamental oregano is stunning. I saw some in the book, "The Jewel Box Garden" by Thomas Hobbs and I was stunned. Yours is just as pretty! :)

  23. Hi dear Grace,

Wow have you been BUSY! I adore all the variety you have in your garden. I get the origanums confused too and would love to see your four varieties.

Thanks for stopping by today. I've been out of the loop.

    Sending love,

    Sharon
