Round Two: This Winter Hates Me

BECAUSE, OF COURSE, IT'S all about me, right? To tell you the truth I had a strong suspicion we'd see more cold weather before winter's final farewell so this doesn't really surprise me. I mean, look what the rest of the country has endured. Even my friends in Texas and Florida are seeing colder than normal temps.

Fortunately my supervisor at work is a very understanding human being, well aware of my propensity to panic if I'm on snowy roads. I'm stay-cationing, watching the snowflakes pile up into heaps and mounds.

Here is my trusty-rusty-under-the-covered-patio thermometer at 10 AM this morning.

About 25 degrees F
 And my-out-in-the-middle-of-the-garden thermometer.

About 21 degrees F.

The pillar isn't crooked. The photographer was feeling the chill and didn't have the patience
to hold the camera steady.

However, in the midst of my blubbering about the weather, there is good news to share! It started when Tammy of Casa Mariposa fame alerted me to Oregon blogger Susan Troccolo's Life-Change-Compost blog. Susan was running a contest for the best advice on redesigning her shady front garden bed. Never known for my brevity, I launched right in to all the things I would do if I were undertaking such a challenge in my garden. Well, Susan was apparently pleased because lookie what came in the mail!

I went a little overboard purchasing seeds this year and was trying to figure out how I was going to get them all going. I already have one heat mat and yippee now I have two.

Thank you Susan for your generosity. If you've got a few minutes, please hop over and say hi to Susan

  2. Oh my goodness, you sure got a blanket of snow covering everything. What a difference in winter and when your gardens are in full bloom.

Congrats on the win, great for starting your garden this spring.

  3. The snow started here about noon today and has been goin' ever since. I finally talked my husband into leaving his office in Tigard about 2:30. I called to check in at 3:30 and he was sitting on the side of I-5, broken down, waiting for a tow truck. It's now almost 5:00 and he's still waiting. Poor guy. I love snow, from indoors, and most of all, when everyone is home and safe inside. Poor timing this year. I'd say that no matter what, but it really did pick a sucky weekend to bring it. We have a babysitter for the first time in ????? for Sat. There better not be ice on the ground or this mom will be pissed off.

  4. For a self-proclaimed whiner (I would never call you that) you showed some grit in getting out there to take photos. I figure I have a lifetime of snow shots from the last few storms, but I like seeing yours.

  6. Gracie girl ... I am afraid you would never make it as a Canadian.
But hell ! you don't have to and that little bit of white fluff will be gone very soon as compared to my many feet of it here .. big sigh !
You lucky devil ! that was very nice of Susan .. hum ? maybe that is what I should try .. open forum on how to rearrange my front bed and see what kind of suggestions I get?
    Joy : )

  7. What a lovely gift from Susan. I feel for you Grace but would quite like to see some of that white stuff. It's been blowing over the Atlantic to here as wave after wave of high winds and endless rain. Think that we will all be delighted to see the back of this particular winter!

  8. Hi Grace, Hey, thanks for the shout out, I appreciate it! You are pretty cute to go out into the snow to take a photo of your winnings...best of luck with your seedlings and garden this year. Best, Susan

  9. Woo-hoo! Seed starting is how I'm beating the winter blues, too. We have a storm headed our way with a forecast of up to 2 ft of snow. It may be August before we finish school this year. But we're closer to spring now than we were in November, so it's all good. In 6 mos we'll all be complaining about the heat. :o)

  11. Brrr ! It looks icy Grace ! Stay inside and get sowing with your lovely new heated seed mat ! I don't want to rub it in but ... here in the UK the sun is shining for a change and it feels like Spring is in the air . Now, I know that this is just lulling me into a false sense of security as there is still plenty of time for your sort of weather. Meanwhile ... seize the day !!
