I Saw Something Interesting Today

IS EVERYONE ENJOYING their last few weeks of gardening? September is really a gorgeous month, weather-wise, isn't it?

Canna 'Tropicana'
The photo below, a drive-by, is the entrance to a new student housing facility. The grounds were just landscaped and I found it interesting that they chose to use hardy bananas (Musa basjoo). Although I've seen this plant in many home landscapes, I don't believe I've ever seen it used commercially. I found it interesting. Have you seen this plant among commercial landscapes?

Here is my hardy banana. Much smaller than the commercial ones but it's happy.
And now a little fall-ish foliage to welcome the new season.

Cercis 'Forest Pansy'

Panicum 'Shenandoah'
I don't actually grow Chinese Lanterns but I saw these at a nursery recently and had to get a photo. They're very fall-ish, aren't they?

 Happy Fall!

  1. I love fall colours, mellow, deep and rich. Your banana trees are looking very healthy and happy though the trunks are rather slender which is quite unlike the trees in the tropics.

  8. Banana plants are too tender for my climate. I really love the shot of the Shenandoah grass. :o) We've been having perfect transplanting weather lately. This is my favorite way to end the season. Happy fall to you, too!

  9. Happy fall to you, too, Grace! Seems like musa basjoo banana is everywhere now. We're going to attempt to overwinter one again, this time indoors. We haven't had any luck leaving them mulched in the ground.

  11. I love those chinese lanterns. I've tried growing them a couple times but I must be choosing the wrong area. I always enjoy seeing your hardy banana. I'm pretty sure the Thai restaurant by me has them in their little front entrance (indoors). They're pretty healthy and gorgeous.

  12. What beautiful swirls down at the base of the canna leaves! I'm out ripping out weeds and preparing to do a bunch of fall transplanting.

  13. We definitely banana's here in commercial landscapes. They are actually somewhat invasive, and aren't the same varietal. Maybe those ones will stay put? There is one behind my house by the parking area that has become 12 or so....

  14. I love that you are enjoying fall Gracie-- I know it means summer is over, but every day NEXT summer is closer! And the Western Oregon fall is so lovely. I just need a little power engine to drive the wheelbarrowfuls of prunings...

  15. My grandmother in Indiana used to grow Chinese Lanterns. Perfect for fall indeed since they look like miniature pumpkins.
