September: The New August (Thanks Loree)

WELL, DESPITE MY PROTESTS, which included foot-stomping, copious whining fits and episodes of outright denial, I was unable to keep the curtain from closing on August.  I know many of you are welcoming the cooler days of September and its subtle hints of autumn but not me.

Fortunately the garden has many late-summer beauties to keep me smiling.

The Asters are making quite a scene right now.

Usually my Feverfew flowers are done but this little bunch surprised me.

Rosa 'Jacques Cartier' has been blooming all summer and still has buds.
And he's very fragrant!

I've been taking bouquets to work. Here is one from a few weeks ago.
Roses, Honeysuckle, Butterfly Bush and Phlox smell wonderful.

On a recent Drive-By, I was surprised to see a white-flowered Wisteria blooming this time of year.

Also, although the grounds look sad, this Clerodendrum (Harlequin Glory Bower) tree is amazing.
One of the nicest I've seen.
Here are the fragrant flowers of the Clerodendrum.
On the right you can see one of the forming blue seed pod balls.

A few days ago I found a few hiding clumps of Cyclamen hederifolium.

Anemone 'Pamina' I love these flowers.

This little Dahlia blooms non-stop.

Gaura is such a happy plant and drought-tolerant too.

PINK!

And finally, speaking of pink, I saw this gaggle of flamingos on a recent drive-by. Fun!
Is your garden still going strong or winding down?

  1. My garden is definitely winding down. Despite my watering efforts every week, many things are looking bedraggled and droughty, and a bit crisp around the edges. My Cyclamen popped up just a few days ago too. Your Gaura is very pretty, such a bright pink. And the pink Aster hurts my eyes, it's so bright! I think maybe I need some Anemones for this time of year.itlymbi 46

  2. Beautiful! My asters are just starting to get flower buds. I can't wait for the calico aster to bloom. Each flower is suppose to be a different color. This will be the first year for me. Your gardens are so beautiful I bet they love it when you bring the flowers into work!

  6. Grace I am so with you on this one. I hated to see August go because it spells fall and winter all at once to me. LOL! That Jacques Cartier rose is so pretty and I am always looking for the roses that have a good fragrance. Many of the lovely ones have no fragrance to go with them.
Now I have to admit that I hate Pink Plastic Flamingos. LOL! To me they are the tackiest things going. LOL! I guess we all have our pet peeves though. LOL!
    Have a great week.

  8. Can't say I'm sad to see August end, at least around here. Too bloody hot and humid for me. I am looking at the Gentian that are blooming their heads off and the Monkshood is getting ready to pop not to mention the Actaea..... September couldn't come soon enough! Gorgeous pics Grace. The Cyclamen is adorable, and the bouquets you're still getting to take into work..... amazing!

  9. I compare this to early spring: each new thing to bloom gets full attention after the glut of summer blooms is past...and oh, those turning leaves!

  11. I adore September: my xeric plants are still looking fabulous and there's a small new crop of bloomers, like Caryopteris, feeding the nectar lovers. Although the sheer flower power of earlier summer is over, I like the slightly blown out quality of late summer. Of course, it's my kind of weather, too: warm and dry!

  12. I must admit I'm a spring and Autumn lover. My garden is too sandy and exposed for all this heat, I seem to be watering all day every day ... sorry , I'll stop moaning.
Your plants look lovely, you must have plenty of SHADE

  13. Just lovely blooms Grace! My garden has given up I think some things but few blooming and so many that never showed this year which was so sad...I just want to end it all at this point as it has become so depressing...so bring on September...might as well at this point at least here. We still are so in need of cooler temps and rain.

  18. Your garden looks fantastic, ours is winding down now, not nearly as much colour. Love the vivid colour of that Rosa Jacques Cartier.

  19. I enjoyed seeing what you and some around you have blooming. Your gaura is bushier and less wispy than what I have grown. Mine didn't come up this year.

I'm not happy about the shorter days of September. It's nice to have cooler temps, though. I'd say my garden is on a second wind. There are quite a few blooms out there.

  20. I am crazy for dahlias so Autumn is still a happy gardening time for me, but I do dread the colder months ahead. Love to see things like cyclamen growing in the ground. Here we only see them as houseplants! Love your work bouquet!

  21. Great flower blooms! Is that Alma Potschke? Ours has never looked that good but then we get tired of watering around this time of year so that might be the problem. :-)
We (well, Kim), always thinks fall rains should arrive by now and they almost never do until late October.
